The non-consensual sharing of nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit images and videos of minors can cause deep emotional trauma, lasting harm, and serious safety risks. Once something is online, it can feel impossible to remove—spreading across social media, websites, and messaging apps beyond the control of the person it affects. For young people, trying to get that content taken down can be overwhelming, confusing, and sometimes unsafe. That’s why Take It Down exists.

Take It Down is a free and confidential service from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) that helps remove nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit images or videos of children and teens from the internet.

If you’re under 18 (or were when the content was created), you or a trusted adult can use Take It Down to create a special digital fingerprint (a hash) of the image or video—without uploading or sharing the actual content. This fingerprint is then used to help participating platforms find and remove that content.

How It Works:

  1. Go to TakeItDown.NCMEC.org
  2. Follow simple steps to create a digital fingerprint of the content
  3. Platforms that partner with NCMEC use this to block or remove the image/video

You stay anonymous throughout the process. No content is uploaded, and your privacy is protected.

Who Can Use It?

  • Anyone under 18 who has had explicit content of themselves shared online
  • Trusted adults helping a child or teen
  • No matter where you live—this service is free and available worldwide
